Physical Therapy for Hypermobility
Serving Portland OR | Vancouver WA
Joint hypermobility syndrome is a condition that causes the joints to easily move beyond the normal range expected for a particular joint. This is an inherited connective tissue disorder that often affects children, and it is commonly referred to as having “loose joints” or being “double-jointed”. It is also a feature of a rare and inherited condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is characterized by weakness of the connective tissues in the body. While there is no cure for hypermobility syndrome, improving muscle strength and fitness to protect the joints is essential in managing the condition and preventing dislocations. The physical therapists at New Heights are committed to helping you understand, treat, and manage any joint pain you may be experiencing due to hypermobility syndrome. Schedule an appointment today if you’re interested in hypermobility treatment.
Signs of Hypermobility Syndrome
Because people with hypermobility syndrome possess joints that are capable of excessive motion, they are more prone to injury or dislocation. It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of this condition in order to manage it timely with physical therapy. Some of the signs include the following.
- Pain in the knees, fingers, hips, and elbows
- Higher tendency of joint dislocation and sprains
- Ability to place the palms of the hands on the floor with the knees fully extended
- Hyperextension of the knee or elbow beyond 10 degrees
- Ability to touch the thumb to the forearm
Receive Hypermobility Treatment
While some cases do not require hypermobility treatment, that is not always the case when it causes discomfort or pain. Many people will grow out of the condition as they age and naturally become less flexible, but it is imperative to learn how to prevent dislocations from hypermobility. At New Heights Physical Therapy, we understand that hypermobility may be creating pain or discomfort, and we want to help you prevent the condition from causing injury. Especially when hypermobility leads to injured joints, physical therapy is a great method of rehabilitating the affected areas and is even more helpful in preventing re-injury.
