Concussion Testing & Treatment
Injury from concussions is a concern that every player should take seriously. At New Heights Physical Therapy Plus, we offer baseline testing through ImPACT. The computerized test is simple to take and is an important part of assessing a concussion if one were to happen, and for tracking return to play progression or return to baseline following a concussion.
What is ImPACT Testing?
ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the most-widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. ImPACT is the neurocognitive assessment tool regarded by the medical community as state-of-the-art best practice to determine safe return to play/learn decisions. ImPACT baseline testing is the cornerstone of the ImPACT Concussion Management Model.
Why is ImPACT the superior concussion test?
Developed by clinical experts who pioneered the field, ImPACT is the most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system used by teams, organizations, and individuals globally. ImPACT has the largest database of clinical research (215 peer reviewed and 135 independent studies) on concussion management, validating ImPACT’s evaluation and treatment model.
What information does the test give?
ImPACT testing is a tool to measure brain function before and after an injury. By comparing baseline and post-injury test results, subtle changes in cognitive function can be revealed to provide information about the player’s post-injury condition and track progress during recovery. If your player experiences a concussion but has not yet had a baseline test, a post-injury test is still recommended. The post-injury test will be compared with normative data.
What is the recommended age to begin testing? How often should they be tested?
ImPACT testing is recommended for children age 10 and older. Due to significant changes in brain growth, annual baseline tests are recommended every year for children ages 10-15, and every two years for high school age players and adults. If a concussion is sustained, multiple tests are then used to guide the return to play decision (ultimately made by the physician involved), and progress through treatment.
How long does the test take?
Parents should plan on 45 minutes total; the test itself takes 25 minutes. Concussion education will be available for parents and coaches while the child is taking the test. We recommend scheduling testing during the summer months before the school/sports year begins.
What is the cost of ImPACT Testing?
Baseline concussion tests are $25 and post-concussion tests cost $35.
NEU players receive a 20% discount.
The cost of ImPACT testing is not covered by insurance.
